Interweave Dance Theatre (IDT)
Founded in 1980 as the Boulder Jazz Dance Company, the company changed its name in 1995 to Interweave Dance Theatre to better reflect the diversity of the work it presents: not only jazz dance, but also modern dance and theatre pieces. IDT is the professional performing company in residence during the Boulder Jazz Dance Workshop. Each year, workshop dancers have the opportunity to audition for the following season as well as for IDT II.*
Although IDT is a separate entity from the BJDW and consists of company members who are not on the BJDW faculty, we regard the company performance as a BJDW faculty performance since the core faculty members are all an integral part of it. This offers a valuable opportunity for students to see their teachers in performance (and to see their choreography on professional dancers). We consider this an essential aspect of the educational experience of the BJDW.
2017, IDT’s 37th Season: August 5, 2017 at 3 p.m. & 8 p.m.
Maison Exquis (Exquisite House)
A Dance Theatre performance about the interior spaces of an imaginary house.
Each dance in Exquisite House is based on a room in a house. Although this project is in the early stages of development, different possibilities in individual approach have been suggested to the prospective choreographers. You can expect any of the following: The dances may take place in the choreographer’s chosen room and literally establish that room with lighting, furniture and props; could be based on the choreographer’s memories or associations to a particular room; might be about activities that takes place in a particular room without literally establishing a physical “room” on the stage; and the connection to the choreographer’s selected room could be drawn from the lyrics of a song. All will revealed when our house is unveiled. While each dance will be based on a “real” room, what takes place in that room may be very unreal (surreal). Through this project, the IDT Choreographers will reveal something about themselves and the private interiors of their psyches to the audience.
Our Creative Process for this project: Our imaginary house will be an “exquisite corpse”** type of construct – i.e. in the end, the nature of the house will become known to all… but as it is being created, each choreographer will not know how, or if, his or her room connects to the house as a whole. Therefore, the rooms of this house will not fit together in any logical manner.
**French Surrealist André Bréton is credited with inventing the game of Exquisite Corpse, a game played by the Surrealists mid-1920’s. Through the “game” (that the Surrealists came to take quite seriously), the artists spontaneously created irrational works of art with each artist’s contribution intentionally drawn from the subconscious. *IDT II: Formed in 2013, IDT II is an offshoot of IDT and offers an elite group of dance students the opportunity to perform in a piece choreographed by an IDT dancer. This piece is connected to the theme of the IDT project, but is performed in the BJDW performance (August 4, 2017). Participation in IDT II can be a first step toward dancing with IDT.
